Confession of a New waver
I was too young then during the early 80's, where all kids would enjoy their action figures or sentai robots from Japan... Though I was heavily into that stuff myself, I was already enjoying music as it is...
Back in my grade school days in Guam, after coming from class, I always had the habit of watching afternoon music videos. I forgot what's the show called, we didn't have cable access then to MTV (that kinda sucked big time!!!), but there were other music video shows out there to settle for... It was the first time I saw "Wild Boys" and "The Reflex" MTV by Duran Duran, this was some time in 1983, I didn't know then what were their music was classified into... But I sure enjoy their music... I was fortunate enough to see them live last April 10, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum at their "Red Carpet Massacre Tour." I hard to work hard to secure those freebie lower box seat tickets at the MTV Pilipinas Office, but it was worth the trouble. The last time they came here was in 1988 during the "Big Thing Tour," I was only 5th grade then...
When I returned to continue my schooling in the Philippines some time in 1985, I remember my "Ate" Claire getting hold of the "No Sense of Sin" album by the Lotus Eaters, which was referred to her by my cousin, "Kuya" Eller, another new wave fan... That was the first time I heard German Girl... That vibe, that distinct sound, the digital drum machine, old school synthesizer was just cool to hear on your stereo system... My cousin also introduced to my sister, The Orchestral Manoueveres in the Dark, that was the "Crush" album...
A few months later or so, my sister got hold of "Speak and Spell" and "Some Great Reward" albums of Depeche Mode... At this time, "People are People" and "Everything Counts" were hitting the airwaves, I remember that infamous chorus, "People are people so why should we be..." But its weird, only a few years later did I appreciate the music of Depeche Mode and eventually becoming a fan... My sister gave me the 1990 relased "Violator," it was in the song "Enjoy the Silence," where I really got into DM's music... Thank God I was able to see the "Devotional Tour Concert" in 1993 at the Folk Arts Theater, a time when Alan Wilder was still in the group...
I really enjoy talking to people who share the same passion for music, it really does make me feel that I belong in their circle. That sense of belonging makes me feel at home with them... And through this Community Boards, I along with the rest of the Co-Founders of this Community Boards hope to achieve that...
Along the way, this genre slowly died down, especially when the 90's came... New genres sprouted like mushrooms... Indeed new wave during this period was a lost wave in the ocean... But we are fortunate there are those who continually live up to the music and what it stands for... During those times, I never gave up on the music I grew up to live and love... I started talking about it, to friends, family and more recently over the internet...
Believe it or not, the New Wave Vault started only as a topic thread in one of the message forums that I go to. Every time I register in other message forums, I would always create a similar topic to talk about because I simply love this music genre...
However, I realized that there is so much to talk about in this music genre which I believe to be is one of the most greatest musical movement that has ever happened to music history and the industry itself. Thus, the inception of the New Wave Vault Community Forums...
What's so cool about new wave is that its nostalgic, we could talk almost about anything, the artists and their music, and how it has affected our lives forever. They sprout to our experiences during our childhood, our school days, and how it still lingers within us today...
I am a new waver, if that's what new wave fans are called, I don't you how it exactly began, but when I heard the music, how melancholic it could be, how moving it could get, I never stopped since then. Music is my passion, new wave mixes it well, blends with any mood swings that I go through with in life... It is my cure, It's my life...
