note: it was very unfortunate that the promoters were very strict... this conert was last april 10, 2008...
it is no secret how much of an avid fan i am to new wave, new romantic and post punk new wave of the late 70's, whole 80's and early 80's... can't get enough of it...
when news came to me that duran duran were gonna have a one night concert in line with their red carpet massacre tour... i told myself, i would not miss this... i was unfortunate to miss the big thing concert sometime in 1988 or 89... 19 or so more years of long wait... but it was here... i wasn't gonna miss it, i bought general admission tickets for Php. 1,200.00 ($ 24)...
a day before the concert, one of my close Grupo Toyota (GT car club) friends, joh_luc (johans) texted me, he said, "hey, wanna have 2 lowerbox tickets to the concert tomorrow?"
daym!!! why only now when i got some tickets already?, then i decided, by hook or by crook... i'm gonna take those tickets... i wanted to treat my wife out since its gonna be her birthday on the 12th...
we left at 2pm and headed to the MTV Pilipinas office at the silver city mall... and there we met joh_luc's brother, jasper lucena, a senior graphic artist at MTV, it was he who was gonna hand me down the coveted lowerbox tickets...
very hospitable gentleman this guy is and showed me around... to sir jasper and brother johans, you made us happy, we were gonna watch this from the high rise rafters of araneta coliseum, but those guys brought us closer to the fab five, oh wait, fab four, andy taylor left the band last year or so i think... we ere very close to the stage, that was super...
here's sir jasper, jou_luc's brother...
he was the graphic artist who did this artwork behind us...
Duran Duran Concert Review...
Forget the fact that not all seats were taken, but it was already a huge number of fans that were there... and if ever there was a band who was rightful to do an opening act, sandwhich, a new wavish band here in the philippines, fitted the bill...
i am not gonna elaborate that much when duran duran started playing... around 30 percent of their song list were taken from the alums astronaut and of course, their new release red carpet massacre... by the way, some of the songs played on the new album did not involve guitars, bass player john taylor was using a synthesizer to do some digital bass loops, it was kinda kool because depeche mode, kratwerk, and the human league were known for this... nevertheless, the new songs were very catchy...
let's go to their greatest hits... wow, 70 percent were old-time faves... but i won't explain them in order okies...
when simon le bon said "i think am hungry," people rose up and they new hungry like a wolf was playing... wow, just like a time machine, bumalik ang dekada 80!!! it didn't stop there, because the band continued with their songs from the wedding album (1994) come undone and ordinary world, all celfones lit up, my arms were doing the raise the roof move...
then they played their 1986 release notorious... don't need your money, no monkey for your business... the way the tape is played, ganun yung tunog...
then after each song, i would shout out the word, THE REFLEX!!! over and over again... and guess what, simon starts to rant, NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA.... flefleflefle FLEX!!! ayun, the reflex, first time i heard it when i was grade 1 in guam, heard it again... talking about being a die-hard fan...
this one song of theirs, was kinda of like a B-side song during the 80's, was also played... new religion? 80's kids, refresh me...
the spot light turns red and yellow, the infamous bod song a view to a kill was played and everyone was rising at their feet, seeing old folks with their kids singing the chorus "until we dance into the fire, sacred kiss is all we need!!!"
a mic-tripod was placed at front, simon had a guitar... and again, i was shouting SAVE A PRAYER!!! the famous nick rhodes starts playing that repetitive keyboard line.... save a prayer was next... it was one of the best duran duran songs played live that i really liked...
roger taylor starts to do his famous digital drum rolls... and i knew they were gonna play wild boys... all were dancing and singing... by this time, i think i lost my voice, so i was lipsyncing, hahahaha!!!
nick rhodes used a sound machine to imitate a shutter speed sound, and we knew then girls on film was next...
at this time, there was an interlude, simon introduces the band... 3 sessionists, then came the original members roger taylor, nick rhodes then he rants "pay that f@ckin bass john," the crowd rants along, john taylor was ripping his bass guitar...
we thought the show was over... soon an encore of stomping fans shook the big dome...
duran duran returns plays a few more songs which include the 2005 hit (reach out for) the sunrise and the immortal RIO...
this was the ultimate concert since watching depeche mode's 1993 concert devotional tour at the folk arts theater... duran duran remain the fab five of london, england, they remain to be one of the greatest bands to hit the music scene....
too unfortunate i was only able to take this pic outside:(
